Welcome students and parents to the 2016-2017 school year. For many of you, this is our third year together and I am looking forward to a great year of focus, growth, success and fun. This is a very important year for 11th grade students and parents. This year the SAT (and M-Step) are administered and they will be a huge determinate of the route you pursue after high school graduation. Course Description: Algebra is intended to increase students’ understanding and skills in their ability to recognize and solve mathematical and real-world problems involving relationships, and to make sense of and move fluently among the graphic, numeric, symbolic and verbal representations of these patterns.
Course Topics: Real Numbers, Mathematical Computations, Solving Equations, Graphing Equations and Functions, Inequalities, Polynomials

Course Goals/Objectives:
Prepare students for SAT/M-STEP in April 2017
Increase student mathematical skills.
Increase student’s self confidence in their math ability.
Promote a supportive environment among peers.
Prepare students for following courses.
Required Materials/Supplies: Pencils, 1- 1 ½ in. binder, loose leaf paper, dividers (for binder)
Grading Procedures:Students are expected to complete every assignment that is assigned to them. Late work will be accepted but will be marked down by 30% if assignment is unexcused. Missing work will be marked as a zero. Extra Credit assignments will not be given out but there will be in-class opportunities to receive some form of extra credit. Points can also be deducted for inappropriate behaviors.
Grading Criteria: Grading Scale: Tests/Quizzes/Projects: 40% A – 90% and up Classwork/Homework: 30% B – 80% - 89% Participation: 15% C – 70% - 79% Do Now/Notebook/Exit Slips: 15% D – 60% - 69% F - < 59% Description of the grading criteria: Quizzes/Test/Projects: Quizzes are worth 50 points and Tests worth 100 points. Students may receive Take Home Test/Quizzes throughout the year. Any projects given will be worth a Test Grade.
Class work/Homework: These are assignments that will be given in class used to help students practice the skills they are expected to master and assist in maintaining average grades in any case where test grades are not as high as desired. Homework will be given EVERY MONDAY and due the following Monday.
Participation: Students are expected to participate in class whether the assignment/activity is for students to work alone, in pairs or in groups. Students must be present in order to participate therefore attendance is essential.
Do Now/Notebook/Exit Slips: Do Now is a warm up assignment that should be completed in the designated section of their binder which is given at the beginning of every class. Exit slips are done at the end of class used to measure student understanding. Students will be required to take some notes during class and are expected to maintain their binders for grade checks.
One of the primary goals in this course is to provide a safe and supportive environment conducive for student learning. In order for this to occur specific Procedures, Expectations as well as Consequences have been put into place. Classroom Procedure:
Students will be greeted at the door by me and any special instructions for that day will be given at that time.
Students are expected to be in their seats at the time class begins.
Do Now will be posted daily and is expected to be completed within the first 5-10 minutes of class beginning.
Participate in activities for the day.
Classroom Expectations:
Be respectful to adults, peers and self.
Come to class on time and prepared.
Put forth your best efforts each day
Dress in school uniform
Choose words wisely.
Be respectful to others’ space and property (No destruction or stealing of property that does not belong to you.)
Consequences: Students will be held accountable for noncompliance with classroom and school rules and expectations. The following disciplinary actions may be taken depending on severity of violation:

Call home
Parent-Teacher Conference
After school Detention
Written Referral/Suspension
Additionally Information:
Students are required to participate in MCH’s Health and Fitness Days and Annual Health Care Conference. Students will receive multiple grades for each session and these grades will be included under the “Test” category. Dates To Be Announced
Students will need an email in order to login for some of their online work. If students do not already have one where they know their information, they will setup one during class. If you have a problem with your student having/creating an email account, PLEASE CONTACT TEACHER IMMEDIATELY.
Students requiring additional assistance will be able to schedule additional time with me. Students requiring specialized services will be accommodated according to their IEP (this could include modified grading, extended time on assignments, and workload).
Check the class website for information. Parents can check their student’s grades through Detroit Parent Portal and students can check through Detroit Student Portal. Check with teacher for more information.
Assignments are graded on effort and completion (In general, students must show their work, NO WORK NO CREDIT
Students are responsible for their own assignments and makeup work. If students do not have internet at home and an assignment requires it, they must notify me to make arrangements.
Absence excuse is required for late submission markdown not to occur.
No Food Allowed. Students are allowed to have drinks as long as they have a top to them and are 1 liter or less.
Backpacks, coats, hoodies and other outerwear are not allowed in the classroom. Students must have their own lockers with a lock. Locks can be purchased in the school Bookstore. Rooms may be cold therefore students can wear long sleeves under their uniform shirts or cardigan sweaters. Students can also purchase MCH Sweatshirts from the bookstore.
Cellular phones and headphones are not to be seen or heard unless with permission from classroom teachers. If seen or heard, student will first get warning. If continued use occurs, students phone will be confiscated until end of class or end of day. PLEASE SO NOT CALL YOUR CHILD ON THEIR CELL PHONE DURING CLASS HOURS. CALL THE SCHOOL AT 313 – 866-9200 AND THE OFFICE WILL PUT YOU IN CONTACT WITH YOUR CHILD.
